A new dementia drug called Cerebrolysin has been shown to improve concentration, mood and also memory in patients suffering with vascular dementia. Currently, there are no specific medical drug treatments licensed for vascular dementia in the UK. Cerebrolysin is not currently licensed in the UK but is licensed for use in other countries.
Cerebrolysin is actually made from pig brain proteins. It has shown positive results in a few small vascular dementia trials. Larger trials are currently underway and new data is due to be published! One of the issues with this new treatment is that it isn’t currently available to take in tablet form. Instead regular intravenous infusions are necessary which could limit the use and cost-effectiveness of Cerebrolysin in the UK.
